WHEN A COVER BECOMES A CONNECTION

The new culture and congress centre Eisenstadt meets all the requirements of modern architecture and represents an exciting contrast to the capital’s baroque city centre.

The team at Pichler & Traupmann Architekten was faced with the task of a general refurbishment and the result is a tremendous success. The placative building is so much more than just an upgrade for Eisenstadt’s centre; it also creates new, attractive ways to use the traditional part of the city. The metal screen made of expanded metal envelops the entire building and creates a unit, without substantial interference with the existing structure. Depending on the time of day the shimmering surface exhibits different colours and creates attractive visual effects. Aluminium is used in very diverse ways and displays the material’s different applications. Pichler & Traupmann Architekten were awarded the Aluminium-Architecture-prize 2014, a prize awarded by the Aluminium-Fenster-Institut (AFI) (Aluminium Window Institute) in cooperation with the Architekturstiftung Oesterreich (Architecture Foundation Austria) and IG Architektur. The project resulted in the creation of a landmark that plays a vital role in Burgenland’s cultural life. ProMetall is proud to have been part of this project.

EXPANDED METALS – practical and elegant

Expanded metals and expanded grates are made of a single piece of metal to ensure there are no strands causing wear and tear and no weighed-down connections or welding seams. As a result, the sustainable, robust material exhibits significant strength and surface stability which makes it ideal for use in façade design. Various materials can be used, the mesh is generally diagonal, hexagonal, round or square, neither twisted nor welded. Depending on the type, various effects are possible. The material retains its inner stability even when it is cut. Due to their 3-dimensional character, façades made of expanded metal turn into “eye catchers”.
