The special 90-degree edging of the corner elements, together with the company logo’s oversized script and coating, arranged over several expanded metal elements was a master stroke.
WHEN THREE LETTERS SAY IT ALL
OBI’s branch in Triesterstrasse, Vienna, is considered planners’ and façade designers’ favourite DIY superstore, as the various trades achieved a particular master stroke based on ProMetall’s first-class, transparent expanded metal (type “Celje”): 90-degree edging of the corner elements and oversized script/coating of the company logo, arranged over several expanded metal elements.
The OBI-store, planned by architects Marschalek & Marschalek, with its sales area of 10,000 m2 on two levels, a 3,000 m2 garden centre and 250 parking spaces is one of Austria’s largest and most modern DIY stores. The impressive façade design makes it clear that this building was created according to high standards, with the aim to offer something special to its customers.
EXPANDED METALS – practical and elegant
Expanded metals and expanded grates are made of a single piece of metal to ensure there are no strands causing wear and tear and no weighed-down connections or welding seams. As a result, the sustainable, robust material exhibits significant strength and surface stability which makes it ideal for use in façade design. Various materials can be used, the mesh is generally diagonal, hexagonal, round or square, neither twisted nor welded. Depending on the type, various effects are possible. The material retains its inner stability even when it is cut. Due to their 3-dimensional character, façades made of expanded metal turn into “eye catchers”.
