GREEN MADE EVEN GREENER
The AUVA office building in Klagenfurt was literally made “green” by the Viennese practice PWP Architects: intelligent, energy efficient and with lots of plants.
The flat roof, the North, North-West and South façades and the yard-facing garage ceiling are covered by intense vegetation. The approx. 20 cm substrate and landscape structure sits in an aluminium construction, supported by consoles that are included in the roof insulation. Elements made of expanded metal are mounted onto the aluminium frame; these elements are used to hold the plant mat in place. The plants are also fastened with a metallic net. The new green wall was specially designed for this building, and in 2015 the building’s flat roof won the IFD-award in the category flat roof. The building’s façades consist of 18 cm reinforced concrete, 20 cm mineral wool insulation and expanded metal cladding made of anodised aluminium. The aluminium composite windows are equipped with electrically controlled blinds (bus system) that close automatically at the end of the workday and on weekends.
EXPANDED METALS – practical and elegant
Expanded metals and expanded grates are made of a single piece of metal to ensure there are no strands causing wear and tear and no weighed-down connections or welding seams. As a result, the sustainable, robust material exhibits significant strength and surface stability which makes it ideal for use in façade design. Various materials can be used, the mesh is generally diagonal, hexagonal, round or square, neither twisted nor welded. Depending on the type, various effects are possible. The material retains its inner stability even when it is cut. Due to their 3-dimensional character, façades made of expanded metal turn into “eye catchers”.
