WHEN FOOTBALL MEETS SUSTAINABILITY
In 2018, the FC Austria Vienna’s home stadium was extensively renewed and expanded, with architects Reinhardt Gallister and Atelier Mauch as Generali Arena’s planners, and Vasko+Partner as general consultants.
Throughout the four-year construction phase at the venue, ProMetall acted as a project consultant and advisor for the new impressive façade. The expanded metal type “Celje”, made of aluminium, thickness 3mm, anodised, was used for the project. The imposing, anthracite-coloured construction defines the four-star UEFA arena which can hold 17,500 visitors, and lends the building a particular aesthetic look, making it very easy to recognise. The intention to revitalise and expand the long-established sports venue and to create a uniform look for the entire complex was successfully executed in professional teamwork.
The Generali Arena is Austria’s first sustainable football stadium, focussing on transparency, accessibility (barrier free) and energy efficiency. In accordance with the Austrian Sustainable Building Council’s (ÖGNI) international award system DGNB, the planning and construction phase was used to optimise the new football arena from an ecological, economic and socio-cultural point of view and make it a European showcase project. ProMetall is proud to have been given the opportunity to be part of this development.
EXPANDED METALS – practical and elegant
Expanded metals and expanded grates are made of a single piece of metal to ensure there are no strands causing wear and tear and no weighed-down connections or welding seams. As a result, the sustainable, robust material exhibits significant strength and surface stability which makes it ideal for use in façade design. Various materials can be used, the mesh is generally diagonal, hexagonal, round or square, neither twisted nor welded. Depending on the type, various effects are possible. The material retains its inner stability even when it is cut. Due to their 3-dimensional character, façades made of expanded metal turn into “eye catchers”.
